The study of several individuals of the genus Testacella J. Gray, 1840 from Menorca and Mallorca and their comparison with other European populations included in the scutulum group (characterized by a penis without any type
of dilatations or flagella) has revealed the existence of differences at conchological and external anatomy level
related to the peculiar morphology of the posterior margin of the shell and the termination of the two posterior
ends of the lateral grooves. The presence of fossil eggs and shells in the Plio-Pleistocene deposits of Menorca indicate its autochthonous character. It is considered that the extant Testacella of Menorca derive from pre-human
populations, since there are no significant differences in the morphology of extant and fossil shells. Due to their
autochthonous character and the aforementioned differences, the populations of Menorca and Mallorca represent a new endemic species with a distribution specific to those islands, although it is true that molecular studies
will be necessary to confirm or disprove this hypothesis. The new species has clearly cryptic characteristics, since
the differences with the rest of the populations included in the scutulum group are very small, which is why
they have gone unnoticed or have been ignored. However, such differences take on a new meaning in light of
their biogeographic context, in which the populations of Menorca and Mallorca have evolved, in isolation, since the Paleogene, the period in which the fragmentation of the hercynian shield and the separation of the Balearic
Islands from the Iberian Peninsula began. [-]
