Brand journalism is becoming a powerful tool to improve brands reputation. It has
been possible thanks to the current ability of brands to reach their audiences directly
without intermediaries. On this way, brand journalism arises in a context where the
fall in advertising spending and new consumption models offered by the Internet
have caused the crisis of some media as the press. Thus, brand journalism has
supporters and opponents. On the one hand, because it is a new job opportunity, and
in the other hand, because it born linked to the power of a brand.
This study is based on three brand journalism media in Spain to analyze how the
phenomenon has been developed, characterize it and determine the quality of its
contents. Selected brands are BBVA, Coca Cola and Eroski. The content analysis
focuses on the sources, the appearance of the brand, thematic and temporary impact
through quantitative techniques. The results show deficiencies in the management of
sources and the consequent decline in the quality of content as well as a major role
of brands in some of the media. [-]
