dc.description.abstract | Mad Men (Matthew Weiner, AMC: 2007), which revolves around the world of advertising agents in the sixties, pushes elemental narrative (infra)structures just a little bit further by clinging onto a character who is nothing more than a façade in order to illuminate a whole world and thus cast light on a particular period and country. Although the plot as such is not important (there are no murders or ingenious twists in the story or artful screenplay devices), it does offer us a painstaking description of what American life was like in one of the most important decades of the 20th century. The series offers a very true-to-life portrayal of the roles of men and women at a certain time, while also exploring the real human nature that lay underneath the outward appearance of family values in 1960 | |
