Teaching and learning is multimodal and teachers can benefit from a greater awareness
of how semiotic resources may be effectively orchestrated. The learning of the
multimodal communicative processes should be explicitly taught and training at higher
education may be necessary, particularly for CLIL contexts. In this paper, we present an
informed pedagogical proposal aimed at training pre-service and in-service PE teachers
on the multimodal nature PE discourse and the multimodal pedagogical affordances that
contribute to constructing effective scaffolding strategies. A multimodal analysis
focusing on teacher discourse was carried out to examine spoken language with a
particular focus on non-verbal communication (i.e. gestures, body position and
paralanguage) in combination with any other didactic material or strategy used. Data from
this analysis allows to frame the pedagogical proposal and to present the true nature of
multimodal scaffolding strategies with the aim of highlighting fundamental features of
CLIL teaching and establishing best practice guidelines to assure eventual effectiveness
of such pedagogical approach. Despite our proposal being focused on PE, we believe it
can be a model to follow in any comprehensive formative course for future CLIL lecturers
willing to include multimodal communicative procedures and devices in light of their
impact on communication. [-]
