Arnold Van Gennep ( 1 873-1857) is nowadays well known by ethnographers for his work on The Rites of Passage. His Handbook of French Folklore is also still mentioned in the academic studies about popular culture. But, after World War One, he produced an ethnographic theory of the nation which retained less attention. This article focuses on this theory and proposes to understand how Van Gennep relied on his former work about rites of passage (Part I) to build a non-substantialist conception of nation (Part II). Grounded essentially on integrative social practices, Van Gennep's approach can provide interesting insight into contemporary debates about national identity. [-]
