Traducir el trauma y el estigma a escritura autobiográfica: una lectura de James Rhodes

Abstract

Debo este artículo al recital de piano que James Rhodes ofreció en el Palau de la Música de València el día 26 de noviembre de 2016 y al libro del mismo pianista y escritor, Instrumental. A memoir of madness, medication and music. La experiencia como espectador de aquel recital tan personal e inusual, en el que la vida del intérprete penetraba visiblemente el escenario y la ejecución de la partitura, me llevó a leer su libro y a adentrarme en el ámbito de los relatos sobre la vida (life narratives, en terminología de Smith y Watson, 2010). El objetivo de este artículo es doble: explorar algunos elementos discursivos y temáticos especialmente significativos en el autorelato de James Rhodes; y acotar algunas preguntas y categorías de análisis relevantes para futuros trabajos sobre autorelatos. Este estudio de caso puede arrojar luz sobre algunas cuestiones candentes relativas a los relatos de pacientes como la versatilidad y el dinamismo de la autobiografía como género o las fronteras entre ficción, verdad y subjetividad.

I owe this paper to the piano recital that James Rhodes gave at Palau de la Música

de València on the 26 th of November 2016, together with the book the pianist and

author wrote, Instrumental. A memoir of madness, medication and music. The

experience as a spectator of such unusual and personal recital, how one could feel

the life of the musician entering the stage, and the way the scores were performed

led me to read his book and delve into the world of life narratives, in terms of

Smith and Watson (2010).

This paper is double-aimed. On the one hand, it attempts to explore a number of

thematic and discursive elements that are especially significant in James Rhodes’

life story. On the other, it defines the relevant questions and analysis categories for

future works on life narratives. This case study may indeed shed light on a number

of issues regarding patient stories, such as the versatility and dynamism of life

narratives as a genre and the boundaries between fiction, truth, and subjectivity.
