EL DOLOR COMO TRIUNFO. SACRIFICIO, TORTURA Y LIBERACIÓN EN LAS MÁRTIRES CRISTIANAS

Abstract

Las mártires cristianas mantuvieron su fe, pese a la tortura y el tormento que les infligieron sus captores. El propósito de este ensayo es la interpretación de la iconografía de la representación de estas mártires, mostrando que, en muchas ocasiones, fueron más fuertes en la lucha por la libertad que los hombres. Voy a presentar una aproximación al sentido del martirio cristiano que permita la comprensión de la figura de la mártir y la asunción del dolor como triunfo. Veremos cómo se concreta la representación del dolor en su iconografía y estudiaremos la evolución en la representación del dolor y la instrumentación de éste al servicio de la catequesis o del goce estético. Analizaremos las representaciones del martirio de las santas, tanto desde el punto de vista formal como observando su significado y fundamentacion en las fuentes literarias.

Female Christian martyrs stood firm against the tortures and torment of their captors, enduring till the end and never breaking with the faith. The purpose of this essay is to interpret the iconography of the representation of the blessed Christian virgins and to show how their fight for freedom surpassed that of men. An approach to the meaning of Christian martyrdom that will allow the understanding of the martyr and the acceptance of pain as triumph will be dealt with. The representation of the iconography of pain, and how it is used for catechesis or aesthetic enjoyment will be studied. The representations of the martyrdom of some female Christian saints will be analyzed formally and through the observation of its meaning and justification in literary sources
