Gracias a

Hypatia of Alexandria personifies the defense of the late paganism. About her life, her
work at the head of the school of philosophy, her political influence and the circumstances of
her death has been written very much, interweaving reality and legend, since the Antiquity.
Thanks to Alejandro Amenábar's cinematographic version (Ágora, 2009), the figure of
Hypatia acquired special projection among people. In this article, we propose to study
the Hypatia's image offered by Amenábar, bearing in mind testimonies in ancient Greek
as Synesius of Cyrene, or Socrates Scholasticus, and others. Likewise, we will analyze the
historical setting of the movie, stablishing its relationship with the reality of Alexandria in
the 4th-5th centuries A. D. [-]
