The concept of documentary has always been linked to the idea of reality which was first understood as a faithful representation of it with the least possible intervention. In the cinematographic field there are different types of documentary, such as the observation or the testimonial among others, but all of them have an inclination towards truth. Without losing this intention, the genre has undergone changes and expanded horizons, and even modified its definition to integrate animation in it. This second concept, more connected to subjectivity and fiction, brings a new perspective and approach to this combination. Is this new documentary denomination legitimate even if the displayed image is not filming the real world?
From the analysis of the film “Waltz with Bashir”, we could find the response to this question. In addition, the memory of the protagonists is seen as the main resource in the documentary genre, as well as new forms of relation and representation between documentary and reality. [-]
