The changes that affected the natural sciences during the 20th century – especially as of its second half – took place thanks to Medicine, the ‘science of the spirit’, Psychology and, through this latter, Pedagogy. Gaining a deeper understanding of the human being as a biological and physiological entity, the impact of ‘hygiene as a value’ in many aspects of society at the turn of the century – even in its ‘social’ sense, the organisational problems deriving from the implementation of the right to ‘universal schooling’, and an attempt to turn Pedagogy into the instrument of moral regeneration par excellence, converged in Europe to give rise to psycho-educational attention for pupils that had difficulty fitting into the educational system. To help deal with the problems of adaptation displayed by those pupils, prominent scientists from different fields of knowledge proposed concepts, experiences, criticism and approaches that established the foundations for what, from the early decades of the 20th century, was to be called Special Education or Corrective or Therapeutic Pedagogy.
