Introduction
One of the topics that generates more interest in the research concerned with elder
people is the analysis of the determinants of a better quality of life in this group of age.
The elderly adult must adjust and readjust continuously to the changes that aging brings
about. One of the more recent areas of research in psychogerontology is the one referred
to the emotional changes that experienced by this group of age.
Objective
The aim of this study is to analyse the extant evidence on this issue. Specifically, I
examine the main characteristics of the academic research that analyses the association
of mental health in the elderly adults with the use of emotional intelligence tools.
Method
I carried out a literature review in Psycinfo, Scopus and PyscNET, following the
guidelines of the statement PRISM (Urrútia & Bonfill, 2010), including a total of 9
empirical articles.
Results
Overall, the empirical evidence offered by the reviewed studies suggests that emotional
intelligence is an important resource during aging, since it positively relates with
indicators of mental health like psychological well-being, increasing the use of adaptive
coping (problem-focused coping), resilience and life satisfaction. Also, EI is negatively
related with depressive symptomatology, negative mood, or emotion-focused coping
strategies.
Discussion/Conclusions
IE could be one of the keys that allow to improve positive emotions and prevent from the
negative ones, because it constitutes one of the facilitators of a good mental health;
therefore, the implementation of programs and formative actions that promote the
emotional intelligence can contribute to improve the quality of life of the elderly adults. [-]
