Introduction. Shared decision making (SDM) is a relationship style between the
health professional and the patient in which they jointly reach an agreement on a
health decision. The Patient Decision Aids (PtDA) facilitate this process by
providing evidence-based information. In this context, students from the
Universitat Jaume I (UJI) have created an aid tool for the treatment of type 2
diabetes (T2DM) once the use of metformin is insufficient.
Aim. Develop a tool to help make shared decisions in T2DM once treatment with
metformin is insufficient or creases to be effective. This tool must take into
account the advantages and disadvantages of the therapeutic groups directed to
this pathology together with an exploration of the preferences of the patients.
Method. For the elaboration of the tool, it has been necessary:
1. Search and review about the shared decisions. 2. Follow the steps stipulated
by IPDAS (International Patient Decision Aid Standards) for the development of
the tool. 3. Establish and assess the preferences of patients (distinguish the focus
of their concern regarding treatment). 4. Adapt the tool in order to the preferences
of the patients.
Results. Following the minimum development criteria set by IPDASi (v4.0), as
well as patient preferences and corrections from endocrinologists, a help tool has
been prepared in the form of a comparative table between the different treatment
options in the T2DM.
Conclusion. The combined use of the developed tool and the preferences of the
patients may be useful in clinical practice to help patients make a conscious
decision about their treatment in T2DM. [-]
