In vino veritas. Espacios, misterios y representaciones báquicas de Alciato a Vaenius

Abstract

Hace ya una década que el Museo Nacional del Prado adquirió la sarga El vino de la fiesta de San Martín, de Pieter Brueghel el Viejo, que recrea la festividad del santo coincidiendo con el fin de la vendimia. El vino estuvo muy presente en la pintura de género de los primitivos flamencos, reflejo de una sociedad hedonista, bullanguera y rica, que no evitaba al tiempo asignarle referencias viciosas, inmorales o diabólicas. Para entender estos significados u otros distintos o contrarios que el vino adquirió en la pintura moderna del Renacimiento hay que recordar antes los que ya tuvo en la Antigüedad clásica, el modelo cultural que fue recuperado precisamente en los siglos XV, XVI y XVII. El proverbio latino In vino veritas, atribuido a Plinio el Viejo, enlazó sin interrupción con los emblemas humanistas de Alciato y los posteriores jeroglíficos horacianos de Vaenius. Y unos y otros nos ayudan a entender diversos espacios, ceremonias y pinturas dispersas por la Europa renacentista y barroca en los que el vino desempeñó un papel protagonista, como rituales festivos de la corte borgoñona, la decoración pictórica del camarín de alabastro del palacio de Ferrara, las representaciones del Santo Cáliz pintadas en Valencia, las exaltaciones báquicas de Carracci, Caravaggio y Velázquez en Roma, las composiciones festivas de Jordaens en Flandes o las sutilezas etílicas de Vermeer en Delft.

The Latin proverb In vino veritas, attributed to Pliny the Elder, linked without interruption the humanist emblems of Alciato and the later Horacian hieroglyphs of Vaenius. Both help us to understand the different spaces, ceremonies and paintings scattered throughout Renaissance and Baroque Europe in which wine played a leading role, such as festive rituals of the Burgundian court, the pictorial decoration of the alabaster room of the Ferrara Palace, the representations of the Holy Grail painted in Valencia, the Bacchic exaltations of Carracci, Caravaggio and Velázquez in Rome, the festive compositions of Jordaens in Flanders or the subtleties of Vermeer in Delft.
