A decade ago, the Prado National Museum purchased the twill by Pieter Brueghel
the Elder, The wine of the feast of St. Martin, a recreation of the feast of the Saint coinciding with the
end of the harvest. The wine was very present in the genre painting of the primitives Flemish, a
reflection of a hedonistic, boisterous and rich society, which at the same time did not avoid assigning
to it vicious, immoral or diabolical references. To understand these diverse meanings in the modern
Renaissance painting, it is necessary to 6rst remember those that it already had in classical Antiquity,
the cultural model that was recovered in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. The Latin proverb In
vino veritas, attributed to Pliny the Elder, linked without interruption the humanist emblems of
Alciato and the later Horacian hieroglyphs of Vaenius. Both help us to understand the different
spaces, ceremonies and paintings scattered throughout Renaissance and Baroque Europe in which
wine played a leading role, such as festive rituals of the Burgundian court, the pictorial decoration
of the alabaster room of the Ferrara Palace, the representations of the Holy Grail painted in Valencia,
the Bacchic exaltations of Carracci, Caravaggio and Velázquez in Rome, the festive compositions
of Jordaens in Flanders or the subtleties of Vermeer in Delft. [-]
