La ansiedad y la vergüenza en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje. Análisis y sugerencias para docentes

Abstract

Actualmente, son muchos los factores que influyen en el correcto aprendizaje de una lengua extranjera. Entre ellos están la motivación del individuo, las creencias previas que tiene acerca del idioma y el papel del docente como guía y acompañante en el proceso. Sin embargo, más allá de lo positivo existen también otros factores que, en vez de favorecer, impiden o dificultan el aprendizaje de un nuevo idioma; estos son la vergüenza, el miedo y la ansiedad. La combinación de estos factores lleva al alumnado a tener una baja autoestima y, así pues, se entra en un bucle en el que la negativa percepción de sí mismo junto con el miedo a ser objeto de burla, generan todavía más ansiedad a la hora de aprender un idioma, dificultando en mayor medida el aprendizaje lingüístico. El presente documento pretende concienciar sobre la importancia de la autoestima en el desarrollo de la personalidad y el rendimiento académico del alumnado. Asimismo, también trata de transmitir la necesidad de prevenir y trabajar la ansiedad y el miedo que tantos niños y niñas sufren. Con el fin de lograrlo, se observan las implicaciones pedagógicas que tiene y se ofrece a los y las docentes una variedad de estrategias útiles para reducir la vergüenza y el miedo, prevenir la ansiedad y así mejorar la autoestima del alumnado.

Nowadays, there are many factors that influence the foreign language acquisition. Some of them include the individual motivation, the previous beliefs about the new language and the role of the teacher as a guide and companion through the process. Nevertheless, beyond the positive aspects there are also other factors that, instead of boosting, they block or difficult the learning of a new language; these are shame, language apprehension and anxiety. The combination of these factors leads students to a low selfesteem and so, it starts a vicious circle where the negative perception of themselves together with the fear of being judged generate even more anxiety when learning a language, complicating to a greater extent the learning acquisition. The current document pretends to raise awareness of the importance of self-esteem in the personality development and the students’ academic performance. Likewise, it also attempts to transmit the necessity of prevent and improve the anxiety and the apprehension that so many children suffer. With the purpose of achieving it, this document analyses the different pedagogical implications and provides teachers with a variety of useful strategies in order to reduce shame and fear, prevent anxiety and thus, improve the students’ self-esteem.
