According to Lehn, "Supramolecular chemistry is the chemistry of intermolecular
bonding, which encompasses the structures and functions of entities formed by association of
two or more chemical species".1
Supramolecular chemistry studies the phenomena such as molecular self-assembly,
protein folding, molecular recognition, host-guest chemistry, mechanically-interlocked
molecular architectures, and dynamic covalent chemistry. It is highly interdisciplinary in nature
and attracts not just chemists but biologists, environmental scientists, physicists, biochemists,
theoreticians, crystallographers.2
Supramolecular system is a self-assembled entity without covalent bonds, in which
complete molecular units are joined by non-covalent forces to create a complete structure (as
shown in Figure 1). The study of systems that include such structures formed by non-covalent
interactions, such as hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole, van der Waals, charge transfer and π-π
interactions, is known as Supramolecular Chemistry. [-]
