Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease of unknown etiology
with joint and systemic involvement. It is primarily characterized by joint inflammation,
arthralgias, and destruction of the synovial membrane of the joints. Current treatments with
biological therapies are clinically effective but at high economic cost.
Objective: To analyze the trend in the use of biological therapies for the treatment of
rheumatoid arthritis, its cost and optimization practices in the last 20 years in Castellón.
Method: An observational, descriptive and retrospective study was conducted. We worked with
a sample of 310 patients from the rheumatology unit at HGUCS diagnosed with RA in treatment
with BT.
Results: The use of biological therapies has become more widespread every year. Initially, antiTNFs were the most widely used drugs, but with the appearance of new options the group of
other biologics has become the most common trend. The cost of BT has increased annually over
the last 20 years, reaching total values of 16,430,934.64€, a trend that is contrary to the average
annual cost per dispensation, which has been decreasing.
Conclusions: 36% of patients who started a BT finished the follow up with it. Of those treated
during the last 6 years, 24% optimized their dose, thus representing a saving of 515,119€,
meaning 11.86% of what would have been the total standard cost. [-]
