Many factors are involved in the onset of childhood obesity such as hours of
physical exercise and sleep, eating pattern or inadequate satiety response. In this
study, we investigate the relationship between the use of television during the meal
and the degree of satiety after the meal. The procedure was as follows: we selected
the sample at random from the children who came to the Endocrine clinic; the parents
were contacted to explain what the study consisted through a slide presentation; and,
in addition, they were given the questionnaire on satiety that they had to fill in.
Statistical analysis showed no significant relationship between satiety and the
use of television as a distraction during meals. It was observed that 70% of our
patients showed high adherence to the Mediterranean diet and only 5% showed an
adequate satiety responsiveness. Therefore, our study shows that satiety is not
modified by distractors during the meal. [-]
