La medicina árabe medieval

Abstract

La medicina árabe medieval se fue configurando a lo largo de los siglos ix a xv a base de desarrollar saberes procedentes del mundo clásico grecohelenístico y también de otras medicinas. Para ello, fue necesario un complicado proceso de traducciones en el que intervinieron sabios de distintas confesiones. En la época de mayor esplendor de la medicina árabe, siglos xi al xiii, sus sabios escribieron tratados de gran importancia que, por un lado, sirvieron para el uso del propio mundo árabe y, por otro, tras ser traducidos al latín, cimentaron las medicinas escolástica y renacentista. Entre ellos, destacamos la labor de Abulcasis, Rhaces, Avicena, Avenzoar y Averroes. Se completa este estudio con una visión sobre la enseñanza y ejercicio médicos, así como la repercusión de la medicina árabe en el resto del mundo medieval y en el renacentista.

Medieval Arab medicine developed throughout the 9th to 15th centuries based on knowledge from the classical Greco-Hellenistic world and also from other medicines. This required a complicated process of translations involving sages of different confessions. At the time of the greatest splendor of Arab medicine, from the 11th to the 13th centuries, these sages wrote important treatises that, on the one hand, were of use for the Arab world itself and, on the other, after being translated into Latin, laid the foundations of scholastic and Renaissance medicine. Among them, we highlight the work of Abulcasis, Rhazes, Avicenna, Avenzoar and Averroes. This study is completed with an overview of medical teaching and practice, as well as the impact of Arab medicine on the rest of the medieval and Renaissance world.
