Recently, some authors have researched the importance of executive functions in football players. Indeed, identifying talent is an arduous task owing to the
influence of several skills in the overall team performance. Nonetheless, a skilled football player needs to process a large amount of information and make
decisions quickly. In light of this, it is paramount to investigate the executive functioning of talented teenage football players . The aim of this research is to
compare certain executive functions between two football groups from different divisions namely motor inhibition, selective attention, and working memory.
On that basis, the hypothesis states that in such executive functions, football players belonging to a higher division obtain higher scores than those from a
lower division. Regarding the sample, two teams from Villarreal C.F. u-16, teams A and B, have participated in the research, who have an average age of
15 years and 3 months with a standard deviation of 0.76. From each team, eleven players (N = 22) have been selected, chosen by the technical team to be
the ones to play regularly as starting players. To measure the executive functions of each football player, The Stop Signal Task has been implemented for
inhibitory control, the Stroop test (TEA) for selective attention (interference), and the WISC-V Dígitos test for working memory. Furthermore, with an eye to
measuring the intelligence variable as a control variable, the WISC-V Matrices test has been utilized. The results of the analyses of the Mann-Whitney U
tests were not relevant enough since the sample turned out to be too limited due to eventualities beyond the researcher control. Consequently,
striking differences couldn’t be spotted in the results. Notwithstanding, it is worth noting that the findings were in line with the fact that there is a connection
between elite players and executive functions. In short, the study could contribute to reinforcing the thesis that executive functions serve to identify the
special abilities in football players. Added to that, the study suggests that possible enhancement of such functions facilitates adaptation to new and
changing situations on the playing field as well as favours attention and a better recollection of game strategies. [-]
