Phonetic verbal fluency: exploring differences in young and adult sample

Abstract

Women were always thought to perform better in phonetic verbal fluency than men (Lezark., 1995) (Gerstorf et al., 2006). However, currently the debate goes beyond gender, according to Stein et al., (2011) gender was less decisive than other variables such as age to determine cognitive performance, as well as educational level (Alley, Suthers and Crimmins, 2007; Andel, Vigen, Mack, Clarck and Gatz, 2006). Therefore, the general objective of the study was to evaluate the differences in phonetic verbal fluency due to gender and specifically it was checked whether those differences were due to age or educational level.

Siempre se pensó que las mujeres eran mejores en fluidez verbal fonética que los hombres (Lezark., 1995) (Gerstorf et al., 2006). Sin embargo, actualmente el debate va más allá del género, según Stein et al. (2011) el género fue menos decisivo que otras variables como la edad para determinar el rendimiento cognitivo, así como el nivel educativo (Alley, Suthers y Crimmins, 2007; Andel, Vigen, Mack, Clarck y Gatz, 2006). Por lo tanto, el objetivo general del estudio fue evaluar las diferencias en la fluidez verbal fonética debido al género y específicamente se verificó si esas diferencias se debían a la edad o al nivel educativo.
