No obstante,

The traditional categoric dicotomy between men and women can be, most of the times,
limiting and exclusive. This paper presents the debate around the identity of the gender
that is present in the feminism, at the same time that it introduces one of the most useful
tool used to reinvent one’s self identity: the art. Simone de Beauvoir proposed a useful
division for the feminism between gender and sex, affirming that the gender is a social
construct susceptible to changes and, on the contrary, the sex would be an element
practically immutable. This meant a revolution because in this sense, through the gender,
the biologist excuses that defended the subordination of women could be challenged.
Later, Judith Butler affirmed that not only the gender but the sex also is a social construct.
Butler stipulated that all etiquette is exclusive and opted for the performative actions, that
is, defended the subversive activities in order to surpass the traditional conception of
generic binarism. However these theories were criticised by authors like Seyla Benhabib
that defended that, in this manner, the subject woman would be destabilized and it would
be impossible to articulate a policy that pursued an equality. Benhabib proposes, on a
global scale, an ethic and ilustrated universalism where all the people and all the cultures
have a voice so that the categories of men and women aren’t exclusive. In the end,
feminism has to provide a great number of theories in order to enlarge the vision of this
topic as much as possible. Although the debate hasn’t reached an agreement, embracing
all the proposals and understanding that the following step is to interpret the gender in a
more freely manner, is essential. For this we have chosen the precursor of this debate:
Claude Cahun, an artist that revolutionized all that was established around the concept of
gender even before all of these proposals were formulated. The self-portraits of Cahun
put into question the tradition generic dicotomy; the artist provides the exploration of the
identity of her work to her own life and it relates to Butler’s proposals as far as the body
and the subversive actions. Cahun is an indispensable example that personifies the
discourse around gender and, for this, she was an artist considered too modern in her time
and even nowadays still keeps reinventing the debates around feminity and masculinity. [-]
