Radix, truncus, gradus. Afinidades del Árbol de Jesé en el tardogótico funerario

Abstract

El sepulcro de Juan de Grado en la Catedral de Zamora, fabricado a inicios del siglo XVI, es una de las pocas esculturas funerarias conocidas en Castilla, donde se utiliza la iconografía del Árbol de Jesé. Repasamos la historia monárquica y religiosa de esta iconografía, sus fuentes teológicas, devocionales, jurídicas, y sus paralelos artísticos, encontrando imágenes análogas de fin del siglo XV en las promociones nobiliarias y eclesiásticas del sur del Imperio Germano, adaptadas aquí a una larga tradición hispana de iconografías legitimadoras del poder.

In order to depict a “space of time” in Dr. Grado’s tomb, it was used a visual vocabulary which brought the naturalism of sculptors belonging to the German nobility, together with the fashionable typologies and religious iconography, claiming a tradition of Hispanic promotional pictures. This Jesse Tree meant to represent the memory of the past, the legitimacy of the present and the beatitude of the deceased, his spiritual and temporary life, dynamic and everlasting times, the official discourse of his history and the dogma which approved themselves. This is a theological, liturgical, devotional iconography, that is being interpreted through chronicles and medieval law books.
