This work has the purpose of studying the characteristics of psychological
development in adulthood from the perspective of the life cycle, within the
theoretical framework of the authors Erik Erikson (2000), Robert J. Havighurst
(1972) and Paul Baltes (1987). The work focuses on the study of changes at the
psychological level that occur throughout the life cycle. Within the study of
human behavior there are two great options. On the one hand, there is the
objective and external point of view that focuses on cause-effect relationships
that explain how and why a person behaves in the way he does. On the other
hand, there is the subjective or internal point of view that focuses on the vital
experience as perceived and interpreted by the subject, which is the
perspective adopted by this work.In particular, this work is focused on the study of stage 7 of Erikson (2000),
which talks about the dimensions of Generativity versus Stagnation. To do this,
information were collected from subjects 58 and 59 years old through a
semi-structured interview based on Triadó and Villar (2006). The answers were
transcribed and analyzed according to the theoretical postulates of the
mentioned authors.
Once we have obtained the data, we can observe how the subjects, despite
having almost the same age, are in very different situations within the same
stage of development. On the one hand, Subject 1 manifests a high level of
productivity and commitment to his couple and his work, aspects that are part of
the dimension of generativity. On the other hand, Subject 2 shows a
monotonous and boring life with which he does not agree, but he is satisfied,
aspects that are part of the dimension of stagnation. [-]
