Introduction: The treatment of diabetes is based on three pillars: healthy diet, regular
physical activity: maintenance of a normal body weight and medication. In the case o f
prevention, the first two pillars delay its appearance. Therefore, due to the great
influence of diets on the incidence and prevalence of diabetes, the following objectives
have been considered.
Objectives: To identify the viability of vegetarian diets in diabetic patients, benefits and
possible effects on diabetes, as well as changes that can be evaluated serically.
Method: Integrative review with systematic methodology, in which the Medline,
LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences) and the
“Cochrane Plus Library” databases were used. Descriptors were used in natural
language and standardized language (from DeCS and MeSH). The inclusion criteria
were: published 5 years ago maximum, free access, studies conducted in humans and
related to the study objective.
Results: 407 articles were obtained, of which 55% (n = 9) of the LILACS database
were selected, 35% (n = 7) of the Medline database, using the PubMed search engine,
and finally 10% (n = 2) come from the Cochrane Library Plus.
Conclusions: The vegetarian diet has proved to be a viable alternative for diabetes due
to its inverse association, providing a protective effect against the prevalence and
incidence of diabetes. They provide a wide variety of metabolic benefits: decreased
HbA1c, increased glycemic control in Diabetes Mellitus type 2 ... and reduces the
complications of diabetes. It would be prudent to recommend this type of diet when the
patient has some kind of motivation and / or predilection towards it, and should be
supervised by professionals to ensure good nutritional planning. [-]

nutricional. [-]
