Alzheimer's treatments are mainly based on delaying deterioration through cognitive
stimulation and occupational therapy (Ferrández Berná, 2016), where the performance of
each person depends partly on his motivation related to the administration of reinforcements
(Redolar-Ripoll, 2013). Researches with old people with dementia indicate that the most
effective reinforcements are instantaneous behavioural and social (Ferrández-Berná, 2016;
Ortega, Iwata, Nogales-González, & Frades, 2012).
The aim of this study is to explore the most effective types of reinforcement and timing of
application for people with Alzheimer disease, taking into account the different phases of the
disease and gender.
The sample is made up of 47 adults with Altheimez (20 men and 27 women), with different
severity levels (18 mild, 17 moderate, 12 advanced), who go for cognitive stimulation therapy
in a geriatric centre.
For the study, a template was designed to collect data from each of the users. Age, gender,
the most effective type of reinforcement (social, behavioural, material, other or without
preference) and the time of its most effective application (immediate or delayed) were
recorded. The information was recorded by different professionals in the centre.
After analyzing the data by descriptive analysis and non-parametric tests (Kuskal-Wallis), the
results indicate that the level of dementia influences in the effectiveness of behavioral
reinforcement, but not in the rest of types. There are no differences by gender or time of
application, accepting all only the immediate.
More research is necessary taking into account the type of dementia and the disease level, in
order to improve people with Alzheimer disease’s performance in cognitive activities, thus
delaying their deterioration (Romano, Nisse, Del Huerto, & Parquet, 2007) and, therefore,
maintaining their quality of life for as long as possible. [-]
