Despite the high prevalence of metabolic syndrome and
ethanol
abuse, the literature analyzing its
interaction within
central nervous system is
unclear
. The objective of thi
s
work is
to study the
combined
effects
of ethanol and metabolic syndrome
on glucose
metabolism
and oxidative stress
in
mice cerebral cortex. Animals were divided in four groups of study
:
Control, EtOH, Ob/ob and
Ob / ob
-
EtOH
. There were no differences in
insulin secretion in the ethanol groups. There were
also no significant differences in the
concentrations of monoaldehyde
and
glutathione reductase
activity.
On the other hand, the concentrations of basal glycemia and the overload test showed a
significant
decrease in the
Ob/ob
-
EtOH
group with respect to your
Ob/ob
control. The Glutation
peroxidase
activity also showed an increase in the
EtOH, Ob/ob and Ob/ob
-
EtOH
groups.
These
data would support the idea of ethanol
as substance,
which
improves
insulin sens
itivity in the
obese group
.
Results obtained f
rom
the present study also
pointed out
that obesity and
ethanol
are pro
-
oxidants
agents
since
values of
Glutation peroxidase
were increased. Conversely,
MDA
deposits are not increased possibly due to the short time of exposure to ethanol. [-]

etanol. [-]
