The galvanisation mechanism is an electro-chemical process whereby a metal is
coated by another (L. Galvani). Its main function is to protect the surface of the
particular metal to which the galvanisation process is applied. The most common
type of galvanisation consists of applying a layer of zinc over an iron surface, since
zinc being more oxidisable that iron and therefore generating a more stable oxide
protects iron from oxidation. Hot galvanising is the formation of a zinc and/or
zinc-iron alloy coat through the immersion of the relevant iron or steel pieces in
melted zinc at 450ºC, which stands for 50% of the world’s use of zinc. For the last
150 years this technique has been consolidated as the most reliable and
economical process in the protection of steel against corrosion. [-]
