The belief about whether the intelligence can change or not is known as “fixed” (FM) or
“growth” mindset (GM) in the literature. This belief influences on the academic
achievement of children. However, there is little information on whether children with
learning difficulties (such as those wit dyslexia) have a fixed type of mindset.
Therefore, this study aims to find out the relationship between the type of mindset and
the condition of having dyslexia, as well as to see what other factors are associated with
this type of mindset.
To achieve the goal, thirty-two children were recruited (16 with dyslexia and 16 typical
reading development), and were compared in two measures of mindset: a behavioral
task and a questionnaire. Additionally, IQ measures were obtained. The results showed
that children more children with dyslexia showed a FM compared to their typically
developing peers. However, within the group of dyslexia the relationship between the
two measures of mindset was not significant. From these results it is conclude that the
type of mindset can be important when designing intervention models in children with
dyslexia. [-]
