First, there are a number of constant features that are present in a good part of his filmography and reflect the social circumstances of the postwar period. The Japanese filmmaker showcases the intergenerational conflicts of a middle-class family: communication, absence, loneliness, family breakdown, the brevity of life and emptiness. We will see only various romantic kissing actions in his subsequent production, Floating Grass (Ukigusa, 1959). [-]
