The main argument that explains the need of a cibermedio like ‘La Llibreta del
10’ is the trend that has been following the sports journalism from traditional
media (and especially the specialized ones) of not trying to understand and
explain the football (or the sports in general) as it happens on the pitch. Generally,
the media focus their work more on explaining the controversy that has happened
outside the playing fields, which has not any relationship with the sports.

For this reason, this digital media tries to explain the professional football of the
Valencian Community from an analytic point of view, wanting that the fan of one
of these football teams (Villarreal CF, Valencia CF, CD Castellon, Elche CF or
Levante UD) can find on this website an uninterrupted following of his club while
understands the main tactical points of this beautiful game.
And, why the Valencian Community? The simplest answer is by proximity,
although it really is one of the Spanish communities with the highest quality of
football. Villarreal CF have just reached its first final in its history, arriving to the
Europa League final; Valencia CF has a great history behind them, reaching the
Champions League final and being, historically, one of the strongest team in
Spain. Levante UD were eliminated by a single goal and could not reach the final
of the Copa del Rey 2020/21, although its story is equally exciting. Elche CF and
CD Castellon are two historic teams in this country too.
And all this happens during the global pandemic due to the Covid-19 situation.
Everyone has been forced to take extraordinary measures trying to take
prudence with the current situation, and the world of football has not been
different. First, access to stadiums (both for matches and training sessions) has
been prohibited during the highest peaks of the pandemic, especially in the
Valencian Community. This situation has meant that, for a media without impact
or experience, access to the sports facilities has been very difficult in many times.
However, the ball continues to roll and there must be media to cover its
circulation. In that sense, ‘La Llibreta del 10’ was born with the real intention of
telling the game as it feels on the field and as it is seen from outside, always from
an analytic point of view. For that, the website was initially divided into three
sections: ‘El Cronista’, where were made between five to ten chronicles per week
(depending if there was a weekday) telling from a tactical point of view what had
happened in each game. These pieces used to be composed of a firm structure:
an introductory paragraph, an image with the line-ups of both teams, three or four
paragraphs explaining the most important of the match and, finally, who was the
14
best player on the match (accompanied by some bibliographic data series
extracted from the Transfermarkt website).
In addition, the web has two more sections dedicated to the coverage of semiprofessional football in the Valencian Community: one of them is named ‘La
Pizarra’, where it tries to analyze non-professional teams in a more general way,
following the team during a series of matches and making a final analysis of the
coach’s intentions with and without the ball. On the other hand, the last section is
‘El Scouter’, dedicated to the discovery of young talent in the Valencian
Community, trying to analyze the young players (under 21 years) with more
projection within valencian football.
As for the rest of minimum requirements, logically, all the articles on the web have
been closely related with the essence of this medium. The television report, about
the figure of the goalkeeper, it also serves to deepen the goalkeepers coach, who
is also just another analyst (although focused on a single type of player). That is
why it is interesting to know his methodology, his training sessions or what is his
main work with the goalkeepers. It is also helpful to understand what goalkeepers
feel after making a mistake, or how important is the footwork in the modern
goalkeeper.
For the part of the radio report, that has been focused on the figure of the
professional scout in football, it is important to know the work of one of the most
difficult and little recognized jobs in football. In fact, the figure of the scout
maintains a close relationship with this cybermedia because the section of ‘El
Scouter’ tries to imitate the work of a professional: discovering talent, observing
it carefully and analyzing it following the four main evaluable aspects of the
player: technically, tactically, physically, and psychologically.
In the case of the interview with the professional, the figure in this article has been
a tactical analyst with experience in semi-professional football to exemplify what
football is like away from the mainstream media: in the end, the great teams in
Spain have many resources technologies that streamline all work, but teams with
less economic power must adapt to the circumstances and invent ways to do the
15
same work without so many resources. For this reason, the person chosen for
this interview is Luis Alberto Mahillo, who this season has been the physical
trainer in Benicarló CF (currently in the Spanish third division) until he had to take
over the role of tactical analyst too when his predecessor in this work had to leave
Spain at the middle of the season.
Finally, the photographic galleries have not been closely related with the essence
of the media, because the access to the matches has been practically impossible
until the end of the work and, when it has been possible entering to some
stadiums, it has not been possible from areas press (with a better view of the
pitch to take pictures than explain how the teams are playing). Even so, the fact
of having been able to enter a training session at Atlético Saguntino CF, and
having access to the match between Onda CF and Almenara CF, have been able
to constitute two of the three galleries.
The third one, somewhat further from the analytical point of view, consist in a
compilation of the sports facilities in the province of Castellon in which grassroots
football is practiced, talking about the conditions of the pitch, the social and
economic situation of the neighborhood and who usually plays their games there.
This gallery also serves to know the access that children have to start playing
soccer at a time when, in Spain, playing in the parks is almost always prohibited.
Can only people with money play soccer?
For the realization and documentation of all the pieces, it has been used free or
paid web pages that provide very useful data on the football field. Some of them
are: Sofascore, a free platform that updates results and provides interesting data
on top-level matches; Transfermarkt, the most popular database in the world of
football with market values, biographical data of each player and the possibility
of being able to filter players and teams depends on the parameter that the user
considers interesting. On the other hand, it has also been used the InStat
payment platform because through that it was possible accessing to the most
significant data on professional and semi-professional football, as well as the
matches of each team viewed during this period. In fact, InStat is, together with
16
WyScout, the two most used platforms in the field of analysis and scouting in
football.
In addition to all this, the two social networks in which it is about making the
medium known are Twitter and Instagram, because the target audience of this
media is concentrated in both. In fact, it could be said that the birth of ‘Ecos del
Balon’ and the ability to reach young people on Twitter has made many people
who make up this community feel the will to want understanding, learning, and
discussing football with other members of community.
Therefore, the main intention of ‘La Llibreta del 10’ on social networks must be to
replicate that willpower that people have and try to explain the game as it was
done in ‘Ecos del Balon’. Thanks to media like Ecos, which tried to explain the
game from emotions and tactics, people became more interested in football while
they became more intelligent. Consequently, the football debate became more
and more interesting, and the sports journalism was able to find an alternative to
the controversy.
For this reason, the most social network for this website has to be Twitter,
because it is where is the public that consumed ‘Ecos’, still eager for knowledge,
without a similar means of communication that makes chronicles (or articles in
general) uniting the tactical-technical aspects of football with an emotional part
that cannot be separated from sport. Instagram is also useful to continue reaching
a target audience, some different in terms of knowledge but similar in age, and
to be able to lay the first stones in another social network without so much history
in the field of football and tactical analysis. [-]
