The longest-running science fiction television series, Doctor Who, accompanies the protagonist in his space-time travels. The Doctor, of the Time Lords race, is accompanied mainly by young women who help him save the different planets. These women are called companions, characters relevant to the development of the plot and with their own internal evolution. One of the characteristics of the protagonist Time Lord is his regenerative capacity when his life cycle comes to an end. Through this ability, the Doctor Whoseries, since the broadcast of the first chapter in 1963, has been embodied by thirteen different protagonists. In 2017, with its last regeneration, this change occurs for the first time in women. Jodie Whittaker is chosen to give life to the main character of a series formed by 36 seasons, different movies, podcasts and graphic adventures, as well as central axis of other television series of the Whovian universe. The study addresses the treatment of women in the series through two analyses, on the onehand, of the background that made possible the thirteenth regeneration of the protagonist in woman, through the companionsof the modern series (from 2005 to 2017) and, on the other hand, the impact of the sex change of the main character of Doctor Whofrom three sides: in the plot, in the production and in the audience.
To carry out these objectives, the study is divided into four phasesof analysis according to the specific objective to which they respond. The first phase analyzesthe female characters inDoctor Whothrough the companions, through eighteen episodes selected specifically for their relevance to each of these seven women. The second phase, already focused on the female regeneration of the protagonist in 2017, analyzesthis character after herchange of sex, as well as the changes that are introduced in the plot as a result of this fact. For this, three selected episodes are used where the female representation and herevolution in the series are verified. The third phase analyzes the changes inproduction due to the sex change of the protagonist through a series of selected bibliography with interviews with the production team and information collected by the media. Finally, the fourth phase focuses on analyzing the audiences of seasons 11 and 12 of the series to compare them with previous seasons, obtaining data from both official and secondary sources. The results of the study conclude that the British series Doctor Whohas experienced a turning point in which the relevant female characters leave their place in second place to take the lead role. Without a man to protect herself and help, the female protagonist now exercises her role showing the difficulties she encounters because of her biological condition as a woman, but also her worth. The variety of female stereotypes that the series fulfilled and broke, thus encompassing a large sample of women in fiction, takes a step further in terms of female representation and proves not to be below the audience figures obtained during the long history of male representation.
