For decades, the broadcasting of football matches in Spain has been one of the
sports events that brings together the largest number of fans, whether offered
on radio or television. Traditionally, broadcasts of these types of matches have
been influenced by the media itself in which they are broadcast. While on
television the viewer watches the match directly thanks to the image, on radio it
is the narrator who must explain how the match is taking place. The aim of this
work is to gain more in-depth knowledge of this difference between media and
to analyse the style and technical characteristics adopted by the main narrator
depending on the medium of communication in which this professional is telling
the story.
To this end, we analyze the broadcasts of five football matches played during
the 2019-20 season and broadcast on Tiempo de Juego (Cadena COPE), on
radio, and Movistar+, on television. Specifically, we study the type of profile of
the members that form the broadcast team, the topics that they introduce and
the functions that the main narrator performs, as well as the technical
characteristics of their voice. The results obtained show a significant difference
between the radio and television narration. The most relevant differences
between both styles of narration are determined by the composition and profiles
of the broadcast team, the main narrator’s ability to develop new topics during
the match and the speed of diction and intensity with which it is narrated in
every medium of communication. [-]
