Maternidad, cuerpo y empoderamiento en Sharp Objects (2018)

Abstract

Los medios de comunicación nos cuentan historias a través de representaciones, historias que se crean con la intención de transmitir una ideología concreta. Y lo consiguen. Desde su creación, los medios han dado visibilidad a las desigualdades que existen entre hombres y mujeres, pero cubriéndola con una capa de normalidad, como si se tratase del modelo a seguir. En los últimos años, gracias a las luchas feministas y a la creación de un corpus teórico que ha puesto de manifiesto este trato desigual a los sexos en pantalla, se está viviendo un cambio. Se está percibiendo una cierta apertura en cuanto a los personajes tipo que se muestran, especialmente los femeninos. La serie Sharp Objects ejemplifica este cambio de paradigma, no sin articular los conflictos, tensiones y problemáticas que conlleva. Es por ello que hemos considerado pertinente realizar un análisis de la misma, para ver cómo la lucha por la igualdad y los debates feministas y la recientemente acuñada ‘sensibilidad postfeminista’ se articulan en la producción cultural y, por ende, en la sociedad y en el imaginario colectivo. Concretamente, tendremos especialmente en cuenta tres categorías de estudio, profundamente ligadas con el feminismo y la teoría feminista de los medios: la maternidad, el cuerpo y el empoderamiento frente a la vulnerabilidad.

Through media we are told stories through representations, stories that are created keeping a particular ideology in mind. And they successfully achieve it. Since its creation, all media has attempted to shed light on the existent inequalities between men and women, but at the same time covering it with an apparent veil of normality, as if it were to serve as a model example. In recent years, thanks to the feminist struggle as well as the creation of a theoretical corpus that has revealed this unequal treatment on screen, we are witnessing change. There is a slight opening in the types of characters that are being shown, especially in female roles. The TV series Sharp Objects exemplifies this change in paradigm, not without articulate the conflicts, tensions and problems that involves. Because of this, we have considered pertinent to perform an analysis of the series, in order to see how the fight for equality and the feminist discussions and the recently minted ‘postfeminist sensibility’ are articulated in the cultural production and, thus, in society and people’s collective reasoning. Three different study categories will be taken as focus points deeply related to feminism and feminist film theory: maternity, the body and the sense of empowerment as opposed to vulnerability.
