Depression has become a serious problem increasingly frequent, coming to suffer depressive symptomatology of different severity up to 15% of the Spanish population. This increase in symptoms of depression also seems to take place among the adolescent population, reaching up to 10% of young people. It is therefore very important to the detection of these symptoms, as well as to identify the factors that come to influence its development, in order to detect this problem on time and to reduce its serious consequences. In the development of these symptoms are involved a series of risk and protective factors, among them their own vulnerability of each subject, or negative life events experienced over the life that may affect in a greater or lesser extent. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate how the personality and life events influence the development of depressive symptomatology. To do this, we use a sample of 430 students of the Institute of Secondary Education "El Caminás", with ages between 12 and 21 years. All students responded to the JS NEO-S to assess the personality, the ISVA for life events and the SENA to evaluate the internalizing symptomatology. The results showed the important relationship of depression and life events with neuroticism and, to a lesser extent, with the introversion, to the low friendliness and openness. At the same time, life events also explained a significant percentage of the variance in depressive symptomatology. What is more, the personality and life events showed synergistic effects or interaction: the highest levels of depression were in those high in neuroticism who had experienced many negative life events. In conclusion, the personality traits make a person more likely to develop depressive symptomatology, and this trend increases in a multiplicative if, in addition, it is experiencing the most number of negative life events.
