This research intends to carry out an interdisciplinary study about the use of female hysterical patients as exhibition material and popular entertainment in the Parisian hospital of La Salpêtrière in fin-de-siècle society. These medical shows were celebrated throughout Europe during the last decades of the 19th century and codify an amalgam of clinical observation, spectacle and performativity. By examining the institution’s methods, its artificial discourse and its outreach material, we will study the use of hundreds of women as mere scenic complements: their bodies, on which doctors experimented freely, became exhibitionist objects of public curiosity. The hysteric’s silenced histories and voices were reduced to hallucinatory narratives and erotic fabrications, and were combined with the display of their bodies by presenting images as scientific pretext. Hence, they became the greatest entertainment for the Parisian cultural elite by combining medical, political and literary views, and by sharing their observations and cutting-edge techniques all over the world. Hysterical performativity thus becomes artistic and is shaped by aesthetic canons of femininity, mental disorder and expression. [-]
