Desde el ex telón de acero al sol mediterráneo. Europeos/as del Este en la Comunidad Valenciana

Abstract

Al iniciar el siglo XXI, España experimentó un cambio de tendencia migratoria pasando de ser un país expulsor de población a convertirse en país receptor. La Comunidad Valenciana inició dicho proceso unas décadas antes motivado por la notable presencia de ciudadanos europeos en la costa, fundamentalmente de Alicante, en la búsqueda de sol y buen tiempo a precios asequibles. Con la entrada del siglo, se incrementa el número de llegadas y se diversifica tanto su procedencia como su distribución territorial y sus causas. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo analizar a los extranjeros procedentes de los países del antiguo Telón de acero a la Comunidad Valenciana desde el cambio de milenio hasta la actualidad. La metodología utilizada ha sido triple: por una parte, se expone la evolución en el número de llegadas, su distribución por nacionalidad y por provincias; en segundo lugar, se examina el discurso de los medios en torno a la llegada masiva de ciudadanos y ciudadanas procedentes de otros países y las actitudes de los españoles en torno a ello; y en tercer lugar, se analizan los discursos de una muestra de personas procedentes de dichos países en torno a los motivos que les condujeron a salir de sus lugares de origen así como las primeras impresiones que tuvieron al llegar a la Comunidad Valenciana y el grado de satisfacción actual. Las conclusiones exponen el progresivo incremento de personas procedentes de países del ex Telón de acero, siendo los motivos aludidos la situación de crisis económica y política que se vivía en sus países de origen.

At the beginning of the 21st century, Spain experie nced a change in migratory tendency, changing from being a country that expell ed the population to be- coming a recipient country. The Valencian Community initiated this process a few decades earlier, motivated by the notable prese nce of European citizens on the coast, mainly in Alicante, in the search for su n and good weather at afforda- ble prices. With the entrance of the century, the n umber of arrivals increases and its origin, territorial distribution and causes are diversified. The objective of this article is to analyse foreigners from the coun tries of the old Iron Curtain to the Valencian Community from the turn of the millen nium to the present. The methodology used has been threefold: on the one han d, the evolution in the number of arrivals, its distribution by nationality and by provinces; Second, we examine the discourse of the media regarding the ma ssive arrival of citizens from other countries and the attitudes of Spaniards around it; and thirdly, the speeches of a sample of people from these countries are analysed around the reasons that led them to leave their places of orig in as well as the first impres- sions they had when they arrived in the Valencian C ommunity and the degree of current satisfaction. The conclusions show the p rogressive increase of people arriving from countries of the former Iron Curtain, the reasons being the situa- tion of economic and political crisis that was live d in their countries of origin.
