La Inmaculada Concepción. La fábrica de un dogma

Abstract

El ocho de diciembre de 1854, el papa Pío IX estableció, mediante la bula Innefabilis Deus, que la Concepción Inmaculada de la Virgen era un dogma de fe de la Iglesia católica. Hasta ese momento la creencia de que María nunca fue tocada por el pecado original había sido tan solo una doctrina carente de definición papal, defendida por muchos, tolerada por algunos y contestada por voces muy autorizadas. Nunca nadie dudó de la virginidad eterna de la Madre de Dios y de su cualidad, por tanto, inmaculada. Sin embargo, la determinación del momento en el cual su Hijo había decidido privarla del pecado que afectaba al resto de la humanidad se convirtió en una controversia doctrinal.

The 8th December 1854 Pope Pius IX issued the "Innefabilis Deus" Apostolic constitution stating that the Immaculate Conception of Virgin Mary was indeed a catholic dogma. Until that moment the belief that Virgin Mary had been preserved free from all stain of original sin was a doctrine that no Pope had elaborated on. It had been defended by many, tolerated by some and contested by a number of expert voices. Yet, while no one ever doubted the eternal virginity of the Mother of God and her immaculate attributions, determining the moment when Her Son had decided to free her from the sin affecting the rest of humanity became a doctrinal controversy
