The aim of this research is to test the hypothesis about the differences between the Cognitive reserve and the cerebral reserve among bilingual and monolingual subjects. For this reason, 22 subjects were assessed, specifically, 11 bilingual subjects and 11 monolingual subjects who were newly diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. The participants were about 72 years old and they were tested through different neurological tests. After this assessment, the participants were tested with a structural magnetic resonance and subsequently, they were administered with a questionnaire to value the level of activity and the cognitive reserve. Regarding the results, there were two assumptions. The first one proved that there were not any differences between the bilingual and monolingual groups regarding the cognitive functioning. However, the second result proved that the bilingual group gained higher brain atrophy than the monolingual group showing further deterioration anatomically. In addition, patients with greater cognitive reserve prior also showed greater brain atrophy. Thus, the differences exposed above conclude that the bilingual variable acts as a cognitive reserve factor and as a protection against neurodegenerative diseases associated with the age. Moreover, the bilingual variable raises the low cognitive reserve as a factor of vulnerability towards these diseases. [-]
