This work is a comprised of a theoretical basis and a practical proposal for employing Inclusive Education in secondary ESL classrooms taking into account Mixed Level Instruction.
A problem that is often debated nowadays in educational contexts is that of inclusion. In this thesis this will be treated from the point of view of the different levels a teacher may find in a class group. In other words how teachers can work—in an inclusive way—with a class with different levels of the Target Language (TL).
This article will start with a brief explanation of the origins, principles and strategies of Inclusive Education. This part will focus on the differences between integration and inclusion, and the reasons why inclusion is preferred to integration.
The following part will describe the problem of mixed level classrooms. Nowadays teachers may find class groups with different levels. This section deals with the different aspects of mixed level classrooms and the diverse ways to work with them.
After this theoretical framework, the thesis will concentrate in the practical part. An Inclusive proposal will be presented after an analysis of the problems which were found in a specific class group. This analysis is based on the teacher’s way of working in class and the way I worked with the students.
A set of activities will be introduced in order to improve all the needs detected in the previous analysis. These activities will follow the principles and strategies of Inclusion and Mixed Level Instruction. [-]
