The literature based on the investigation about the manifested level of physical fitness on female athletes, based on the hormonal fluctuation that their menstrual cycle entails, whether natural or artificial, remains unclear. The aim of this research was to determine whether the hormonal fluctuation associated with the menstrual cycle, both natural and artificial, causes substantial changes in the level of manifested fitness in female athletes. This was a prospective, repeated measures cohort study with two study groups. Hormonal blood and fitness tests were carried out. Women with natural menstrual cycles have lower cardiorespiratory capacity during menstruation, as well as a lower sensory and pain threshold. Body mass and fat percentage is also higher during this phase. These findings are not evident in athletic women with artificial menstrual cycles. [-]
