This study contemplates the translation into Spanish of Gardner and Brown’s test (2013) regarding misperception in contemporary psychology in order to measure how far these myths and false beliefs have extended over the students of the four-year Degree in Psychology at Universitat Jaume I de Castellón (UJI), taking as a sample the students in First Year and the students in Fourth Year. Thus we’ll be able to determine how these beliefs have decreased or not with the knowledge gained throughout the Degree. The reason why we decided to carry out such research is that demystification is a vital component on the education of Psychology students and future Psychologists. This study has involved a sample of 152 students of this Degree in Psychology: 104 of them were in Year 1 and the other 48 were in Year 4.
Results show that there are, indeed, significant differences between the two groups, since the level of wrong beliefs decrease year after year as the students complete their studies. Nonetheless, and despite the fact that the differences shown by the results are statistically significant, the difference on a scale of 1 to 5 barely reaches a 0.2. Therefore this decrease of wrong beliefs throughout the Degree is not as remarkable as one could have expected.
Consequently, we suggest two ways in which we could deal with this matter: either we do it transversely by refuting the most extended myths during the different modules, or we do it specifically by drawing a brand new module in which teachers will only and exclusively deal with the demystification.
