As authors of the commentary, we greatly appreciate Jay Ginn’s response to
our proposal, and are grateful to the journal editors for their decision to publish
both contributions. The proposal for temporary exit from employment
(TEFE) as an alternative to retirement is innovative, and as we explain below,
opens up new opportunities as well as new risks, all of which call for further
academic and social debate. Readers will gather from our commentary and
this response that we do not share Ginn’s generally negative view, and we
believe the TEFE proposal may be seen as complementary to the Citizen’s
Income (CI) proposal, but not as an alternative to it. Indeed, we consider
the complementarity of CI and TEFE to be a particularly advantageous way
forward. [-]
