The project we present here was carried out in a secondary school in Badalona with pupils who were members of a reception class and who therefore came from foreign countries. They therefore had no knowledge of Catalan or Spanish and this made it more difficult for
them to be incorporated directly into the ordinary classroom.
The interdisciplinary work carried out by the Catalan language teachers in the reception class and the physical education teacher shows how multicultural games can be a valuable aid to bring the language and its comprehension closer to recently arrived pupils, while at the same time educating them in the values of our society. The games were used to enrich written expression, oral expression and spoken comprehension within a more playful, enjoyable context.
The project evolved by including the pupils in the ordinary classroom, where playing their games favoured inclusion because they were the ones who had the knowledge and understood the rules, tactics and strategies of the games. Consequently, the other pupils had to approach and communicate with them if they wanted to play the games properly. [-]
