In this study, bullying at school is analysed from a sociogrupal perspective, whose main interest is to know the roles adopted by peers in bullying situations (Salmivalli, Lagerspetz, Björkqvist, Österman y Kaukiainen, 1996). From this perspective, aggressors and victims are important, but also the passive audience, the defender of the victim or the follower of the aggressor. Therefore, the aim of this work is to study in depth the characteristics of the participant roles: primary and secondary, and to determine their sociometric position within the peer group.
Participants were 441 students (230 boys and 211 girls) with AN AGE RANGE OF 13-15.11 (mean: 13.8), that were administered the Participant Role Scales (Salmivalli et al., 1996), to determine their implication in bullying, and a Sociometric Questionnaire (Arruga, 1983). Results yielded significant differences between participant roles and sociometric status, independently from gender. In the peer group, the defender of the victim was the role assessed more positevily by peers, and meanwhile the role of the victim was the one assessed more negatively. [-]
