In view of the vast range of meanings attributed to the popular concept of civil society, this article sets out to explore in-depth study of the works of J. This article not only explores the meaning of civil society as set forth in Keane’s writings, but also relates it to another series of elements linked to his general philosophical proposal to arrive at a model of democracy that the author interprets through an ef- fective, and new, conjunction of state and civil society that pursues the maximum respect for a wide social plurality.
