El origen del neorrealismo italiano proviene de la resistencia cultural al fascismo
y de su atracción por el modelo literario americano en la década de los
treinta y cuarenta. Pese a que Roma, ciudad abierta (Roma, cittá aperta, Roberto
Rossellini, 1945) consolidó oficialmente la corriente neorrealista, el primer
paso importante fue Obsesión (Ossesione, Luchino Visconti, 1943), pero
suele olvidarse que nueve años antes ya se encontraba el precedente de éste
en Toni (Toni, Jean Renoir, 1934) [-]

The origin of the Italian neo-realism comes from the cultural resistance to fascism and its attraction to the American literary model in the thirties and forties. Although Roma, citta aperta (Roberto Rossellini, 1945) officially consolidated the neorealistic trend, the first important step was Ossesione (Luchino Visconti, 1943), but we tend to forget that nine years earlier this film had a precedent in Toni (Jean Renoir, 1934).
