Hypertension (HT) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), morbidity and mortality [Citation1]. Approximately 1,3 billion people and 47% of United States (US) population are hypertensive [Citation2]. However, only a few of these patients achieve control targets [Citation2].
In 1881, Ritter Von Basch designed the first device to measure blood pressure (BP) in a noninvasive way, later modified by Riva-Rocci [Citation3,Citation4]. These devices were used in order to diagnose and follow-up hypertensive patients, until mercury was banned. They were replaced later by electronic devices [Citation4]. In 1940, the fact that BP measurement could differ depending on whether the measurement is performed by a clinician (doctor or nurse), patients themselves, or someone in their environment, is first described [Citation4]. Office BP measurement (OBPM) has some limitations such as limited reproducibility. Moreover, OBPM would not avoid the alert reaction and it would not present a proper match-up with cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality [Citation4,Citation5]... [...] [-]
