One of the strategies to extend the product’s lifespan is repair. In certain categories of small
electrical and electronic equipment characterised by having a non-complex architecture and low
purchase cost, if they break down or fail, the consumer typically does not consider the option of
repairing it, instead opting for direct replacement. In these cases, self-repair can be a feasible
strategy if the consumer is provided with the appropriate repair material. This study proposes
the design of this material in three different formats (video, guide, and step-by-step
instructions), taking the case of electric water kettles as the application case. The aim is to
identify the most useful format for the consumer to self-repair. To this end, a workshop was
designed in which 63 volunteers participated in order to enhance the information provided and
using it during the repair of a kettle. Results show that 61.40% of the volunteers preferred the
information provided in video, while 25.56% and 14.04% preferred it in guide format and stepby-step instructions, respectively. 24.56% of the volunteers did not need to make use of any
material to repair the kettle. [-]
