Two letters sent by Andrés Segovia to Rafael Balaguer between 1913 and 1914 reveal a personal relationship that contrasts with other sources and the known historiography concerning the presence of the guitarist in Valencia between 1913 and 1915, in a context in which the direct students of Francisco Tárrega (Emilio Pujol, Daniel Fortea, and Miguel Llobet) formed a group that was leading the concerns and views of the rest of the performers and followers in that city. The figure of Andrés Segovia emerges among them, gradually making his way with the guitar without the direct acquiescence of one or the other: in Madrid, in 1913, he established his first relationships with Daniel Fortea and Emilio Pujol and, shortly after, he undertook his first trip to Valencia, where he met Rafael Balaguer. The moment shows Segovia excluded from Tarreguian circles and that only Balaguer appreciated him from a different viewpoint. In a second letter, he reveals his friendship with Rafael Balaguer and the eternal controversy between the fingertip and the nail in the Tárrega school. He returns to Valencia in 1915 on a second trip with preparations by Rafael Balaguer and his father, this time with greater success. His third visit to Valencia and his reunion with Rafael Balaguer led him to meet Miguel Llobet. [-]
